Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal stated that the Indian government can request the extradition of Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the mastermind behind the murder of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar, from the United States. He made this statement at an award ceremony for a speech competition among madrasa students held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium of Dhaka University.
“The primary case regarding MP Anar`s murder is in India, so the Indian government can appeal to the US for Shaheen’s extradition,” said Kamal.
The Home Minister emphasized that all criminals will face legal action. “Instructions have been given to apprehend those involved, no matter where they are. Efforts are also underway to bring back fugitives from Nepal,” he added.
At the same event, Kamal addressed allegations of corruption against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, clarifying that the police force will not take responsibility for any individual’s wrongdoing. “If former IGP Benazir Ahmed is found guilty of corruption, it is his personal matter. The police will not bear the responsibility. Only after an investigation will we know what he did. Anyone who commits a crime will be judged according to the law,” he stated.
The Minister also mentioned that there is no ban on Benazir Ahmed yet. “We have heard that he left the country before any ban was imposed. However, I am not aware of the details of his departure. Further information will be provided after a thorough investigation,” Kamal concluded.
